Even among the wise, animals do not talk. These two were talking.

September 4th, 2023 was the beginning of Rachel Griffin’s adventures. The authoress, Jagi Lamplighter began Rachel’s adventures yesterday.

I’m going to re-read the books in “real time”. The day after the day in the book, I’ll post something here in the blog, including drawings and discussion questions.

Monday

Rachel Griffin wakes up early living the dream: She’s at Roanoke Academy, the greatest school for magic among the Wise! On the first day of first year Upper School (Grade 9) she goes on a madcap broom-ride taking the reader on a tour of the campus and surrounding woodlands, making a new best friend (and three mean girl enemies). En route she spots a man impersonating an Agent of the Wisecraft looking for one of the students. Racing ahead she makes two more friends, spots the handsomest young man on campus, and ends up in the infirmary. After breakfast there’s familiar-bonding, Language and Art classes. Lunch comes with a mysterious prophecy, followed by Music, a free period (where Rachel meets someone interesting, at least if you are thirteen and unexpectedly boy-crazy) True History, and Metaplutonians.

Is there any doubt that Rachel’s dream of Roanoke will come true? That she will have friends, adventures, secrets, learning every magical Art, conjuring roses, and walking with dragons, daring deeds and marvels never before known to humankind! Of course not, but how, and when, and where and what dark paths and roadblocks lie between-? Aye, there’s the rub that makes the magic of a great tale.

The first twist today is that Rachel discovers three cool secrets: a talking blood-eyed raven, a hidden winged statue and a familiar who is larger on the inside than the outside. See you tomorrow!

But then Rachel never forgot anything.

Discussion

  1. Play the game: Many of the characters are “takes” on ones from classic stories. Can you guess who Sigfried Smith, Valerie Hunt, Princess Nastasia Romanov, Prince Vladimir Von Dread would be in other Unwary stories from our Mundane world?

2. Why would a familiar be helpful in art class?

3. Would you want to have perfect memory? Why or why not?
