The business model does not help. You sell more newspapers by being extreme, so you keep going further and further to extremes. Nothing new. Look at William Randolph Hearst!
Also, newspapers make the vast majority of their money from adverts and classifieds. Craig’s list killed classifieds. Every newspaper has a ‘news hole’ determined by how much money they can spend on paper that isn’t an ad. The size of the ‘news hole’ determines how much news you get. The slant of the staff determines what shows up. The daily budget meeting selects the stories from what’s available locally and what AP and Reuters are giving you. There are other news wire services but those are the big ones.
Actual customer subscriptions pay for the paper the newspaper is printed on. Maybe.
A not untypical newspaper! Reporting a story that does not line up with facts as the police see them (or the neighbors for that matter).
My husband, a recovering journalist and copyeditor, taught me decades ago that it’s really true: if it bleeds, it leads.

Yep, and that assumes they’re honest. Our press certainly isn’t!

“The NY Post is Leftist!”
“The NY Post is far Right!”
No. The NY Post is *tabloid*…
Recall the hippie slogan, “If it feels good, do it!” ?
Tabloid slogan, “If it SELLS, do it!”
Tabloid: “Left? Right? I’m the one taking the money.”
