Bonfire of the Hugos

We’re all waiting now.

I honestly thought that by this point I would have a better feel for how the evening was going to go.  Nobody seems confident, but nobody seems nervous either. I’ve met several nominees and past award winners. Editors. Real cartoonists. I even met a lovely “grandmotherly” woman who was going to be a participant on a “diversity panel”.  I, having thrust all common sense into my other pants, asked whether she was taking the “pro” or “con” side. Hugo Grab Bag

I was invited into  a first-time Hugo-nominees hotel room and told those magic  words every smart-alec loves to hear: make yourself at home. Hey, rookie mistake!  I went for  the rumored Hugo Swag Bag to see what it really contains.

Everybody talks about the diamond-studded Tesla and Scalzi-esque book publishing deal each nominee receives, but there is a lot more in there. Continue reading

Matter/Anti-Matter Collision

Walked the art and dealer rooms as we’re oddly connected to both of those worlds. It was all going swimmingly until Codex ran into Dave Kellett, creator of Sheldon Comics. You must understand,  Sheldon is one of the three major comic strips that inspired us to do Tempest in a Teardrop. The other two are defunct. This was like Miles Vorkosigan meeting Admiral Tung or a climate scientist meeting unclaimed grant money. Continue reading

Terri the House Guest

No, we’re not at Sasquan yet, but we do need to check the technology before we go. In addition, we have an unexpected houseguest and hitch hiker for the trip: Terri. My pain is yours, we can do this!

She apparently started in Idaho and thru vague arrangements with produce truck drivers ended up here. We feel it is our Christian duty to see her safely to the con. No good deed goes unpunished. Continue reading
